Abstract

This article provides a systematic analysis of the study of the Uzbek heroic epic “Alpomish” within the folklore studies of the Independence period (1991–2024). The research encompasses scholarly works produced during the years of independence, including monographs, dissertations and scientific articles.

The theoretical perspectives on the epic nature of the dastan, its artistic and stylistic characteristics, historical and genetic roots, as well as questions of versional diversity, are reconsidered. Drawing on the scholarly heritage of leading researchers — T. Mirzayev, M. Saidov, B. Sarimsoqov, M. Jo‘rayev, and Q. Yo‘ldoshev — the article illuminates the interpretations of the dastan, the system of epic images, the evolution of motifs, and the connections of the epic with the culture of the Turkic peoples. A comparative analysis of approaches taken by Uzbek and foreign researchers is conducted, and the role of “Alpomish” as a literary phenomenon reflecting the spirit of the people, national identity and universal values is scientifically substantiated. The research findings contribute to defining the methodological foundations, paradigmatic shifts and prospective tasks of folklore studies during the Independence period.
